About Open Accountant

Privacy-first financial software, built in the open.

Why we built Open Accountant

Personal finance software has been hijacked by surveillance capitalism. Every major bookkeeping tool ships your transaction data to third parties, sells analytics to advertisers, or holds your financial history hostage behind a subscription.

We think financial software should work the way email used to: you own the data, it lives on your machine, and the tool is transparent about what it does. Open Accountant is an attempt to rebuild that — with AI-native categorization, a skill marketplace for specialized analyses, and zero data leaving your computer by default.

What we stand for

Privacy by architecture, not policy

Your data lives on your machine. We can't see it even if we wanted to — because the infrastructure doesn't exist to collect it.

Open source, auditable, forkable

Every line of code that touches your finances is on GitHub under MIT license. If you don't trust us, read the code. If you don't trust the code, fork it.

AI that runs locally

Categorization, analysis, and advice run through local models via Ollama by default. No data leaves your machine for AI inference unless you explicitly configure a cloud provider.

Pricing that respects your time

Free CLI. Pay per skill via x402 micropayments ($0.10) or subscribe to the Skills Pack ($99/yr). No lock-in, no annual contracts, no surprise renewals.

Professional disclaimer

Open Accountant is financial software, not financial advice. We build tools that help you organize and analyze your finances, but we are not a registered financial advisor, CPA, or tax professional. For personalized tax, investment, or legal guidance, consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
